DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods is a Standalone Expansion That Won’t Require the Base Game

DOOM Eternal’s upcoming campaign expansion, The Ancient Gods – Part One has looked promising in what we have seen of it so far (which isn’t surprising, when you consider the quality of the base game), and id Software want to ensure that the journey it presents is accessible to as many players as possible.

Speaking in a recent interview with PCGamesN, game director Hugo Martin confirmed that The Ancient Gods will be a standalone expansion, and will be playable for everyone, even if you don’t have access to the base game- think Dishonored: Death of the Outsider or Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

“When we look at how many people have played through the game we have a large percentage – higher than 2016 – that have completed it, so you’re always looking at that and seeing how far players make it through your game,” Martin said. “It’s important as we want the DLC to reach as many people as possible. In fact, you don’t even need to own DOOM Eternal to buy the DLC and play it.”

Speaking about the scope of the expansion, Martin said that team is “very proud” of how it’s turned out- which is bigger than what they were initially expecting. In fact, Martin says The Ancient Gods is going to be as large in scope as DOOM Eternal’s base game itself.

“Most people would associate DLC with being of smaller scope – it’s kind of like the made for TV version of the movie, and the movie was the main game,” he said. “For us, this is very much like a two-part film – this is every bit as grand as the main game was.”

DOOM Eternal is currently available for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia, with Nintendo Switch and next-gen versions also in the works. The Ancient Gods – Part One will release for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on October 20.
